Jaguars interview Keenan McCardell for coaching position

New Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey continues to assemble his staff, and Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union reports that he interviewed a name Jaguars fans know and love for one of the remaining open positions.

Ganguli reports that the Jaguars interviewed Keenan McCardell on Monday morning for the wide receivers coach position.

McCardell, who played six seasons with the Jaguars, and teamed with Jimmy Smith to form “Thunder and Lightning,” one of the top receiving duo’s in the league, told Ganguli the interview went well.

“It went good. It went pretty good, I must say. We’re still talking. You just never know, Jacksonville would be a great place.”

McCardell has been the wide receivers coach for the Washington Redskins the past two years, but has been informed that his contact will not be renewed, freeing him to pursue other job openings. The hiring of McCardell would be a popular move with Jaguars fans, who were saddened to see the team waive him after the 2001 season due to salary cap troubles.

McCardell’s former sidekick in Jacksonville, Jimmy Smith, took to Twitter to whole-heartedly endorse the hiring of McCardell, tweeting:

“Jag Nation!!!! Keenan needs to be on that Jaguars coaching staff! Period!!!
